Former President Umaru Yar' Adua was elected in 2007. Much controversy surrounded his election as it was believed to be rigged so that he may succeed the prior eight year President Olusegun Obasanjo. President Obasanjo supported Yar' Adua under the preconceived notion that he would be able to maintain some level of control through his successor. This emphasizes the prevalence of corruption in the Nigerian government and battles to stay in control for elongated periods of time. This pattern is seen again when controversy surrounding President Yar'Adua's health arise.
